Liam Jurrah’s fabulous mark
This mark ranks in my three favourites I have seen in the flesh.
The others two were taken by Michael Roach and Jeff Farmer.
Michael Roach’s towering mark was against the Hawks in 1979, at a time when he was emerging as a great young talent. My father Alan recruited Michael from Longford in Tasmania and he quickly captured my imagination as a passionate young Tiger supporter. He kicked a 100 goals the next year in a Richmond Premiership team.
My next favourite was a mark taken by Jeffrey Farmer against the Tigers in 1998. Jeff has given me some of my best and most challenging moments as an administrator. At this point in his career, he was also just starting to assert himself on the competition and was almost unstoppable. From memory, there were almost 80,000 at this game, as the Demons made their way into the finals having won the wooden spoon the previous year.
I should also mention a great grab by Fremantle high-flyer Luke McPharlin which won the Mark of the Year in 2005. It was in a Derby, which made it extra special.
Great moments.
